Michelle & James do Italia- Hiking 52 Tunnels

On Monday, John Ralph didn't have to work (thanks Columbus!) so we decided to do a hike in the mountains up north.  The 52 Tunnels hike is popular for some of the Americans here because of its history and significance and during the first World War.  You can read about it {here}.  A few rain clouds couldn't scare us away, so the five of us (Darby included) packed in the car to see what the trail had to offer us.

It is about a 4 hour hike through dark tunnels.  A lot of the tunnels were wet and slippery, and some were so long that there was no light in the middle of them.  Head lamps are a definite must, but of course we forgot to take any.  Thankfully we realized right before and stopped at a little grocery store to buy two cheap flashlights.  We also forgot to pack (or buy) food, which would have been nice to have.  Allora.

The hike was really beautiful, really chilly, and at times, really cloudy.  At the top, we rested at a refuge before heading down the other side of the mountain.  Darby had a blast running around the trails, and although we were a little beat up and our knees were feeling the pain, the rest of us enjoyed the hike too!

A cave.  No.  A tunnel.

This is what they actually looked like.

Loved the look of this cloudy forrest.

On the way back to the car.

It was a great hike!  Glad we did it.
