One of the decisions we've been going back and forth on the most in the new house is how much we need to invest into the space. It is a rental, so making improvements basically just costs us money while giving the owner an opportunity to get more rent out of the house later down the line. While the yard is livable, some quick improvements would make it a million times more enjoyable. A patio and reseeding the yard with new grass would completely transform the outdoor area. Since we spend a lot of time out there, we're trying to figure out some less expensive DIY options for the space.
As you can see, the dog that previously lived here really did a number on the yard. Darby loves the muddy holes they left, but I'm not so excited about them.
Anyway, while we work out some ideas for the back yard, I decided to tackle a little project in the front yard.
I wish I had remembered to take a true "before" photo, because our mailbox area was looking rough. The pot had some crazy brown weeds growing out of it, the mailbox itself was leaning over to the side, and in this photo you can see the mess of mud and weeds growing on the street in front.
When I was cleaning it all up, our across the street neighbor walked outside and said "…Yeah, I was noticing that looked kind of bad the other day. I try to keep mine clean." Point taken, mister.
So, with my trusty shovel and broom, I got to work on this project. I pulled all the weeds from the pot and added some fresh soil and flowers. I dug up all of the weeds around the sidewalk and got rid of the clumps of mud and dirt that had accumulated there over time. Just in the last few days, the plants have started spreading out in the pot and the flowers have started blooming. I think this small project instantly brightened up the front of the house.
I'm holding my breath that I can keep these flowers alive, because my track record isn't very pretty (I have been known to kill a cactus). The gardener said they should be fairly easy to take care of. It has been about a week and so far, so good. Now it's time to get some pansies in the flower bed in front of the stairs.
